A Guilty Conscience

Many people are more deeply troubled about their sin after they have received Jesus than before. The sin IS a terrible thing but the guilty conscience is a wonderful thing.

2 Corinthians 5:17: Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.

One thing that becomes new when we receive Jesus is our conscience. He gives us a better knowledge of what is right and wrong. When we sin it is SUPPOSED to feel worse after we receive Jesus. That is what a purified conscience is for. A more sensitive conscience is evidence that we are saved. When we feel worse because of sin it is supposed to teach us to confess and receive forgiveness. When we feel worse because of sin it is also to cause us to commit less sin.

1 John 1:9: If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

Before we receive Jesus our consciences are defiled.

Titus 1:15: Unto the pure all things are pure: but unto them that are defiled and unbelieving is nothing pure; but even their mind and conscience is defiled.

The Bible also teaches about the conscience of those that have continually rejected Christ and have continued in sin so long that it may be impossible for them to receive Christ. It may be impossible for them to ever know right from wrong and stop sinning.

1 Timothy 4:1-2: Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils; 2 Speaking lies in hypocrisy; having their conscience seared with a hot iron;

The Bible calls the hearts and consciences of believers good and pure. A good and pure conscience will tell you what is right and what is sinful.

1 Timothy 1:5: Now the end of the commandment is charity out of a pure heart, and of a good conscience, and of faith unfeigned:

1 Timothy 3:9: Holding the mystery of the faith in a pure conscience.

Hebrews 10:22: Let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience, and our bodies washed with pure water.

1 Timothy 1:19: Holding faith, and a good conscience; which some having put away concerning faith have made shipwreck:

Hebrews 13:18: Pray for us: for we trust we have a good conscience, in all things willing to live honestly.

1 Peter 3:16: Having a good conscience; that, whereas they speak evil of you, as of evildoers, they may be ashamed that falsely accuse your good conversation in Christ.

1 Peter 3:21: The like figure whereunto even baptism doth also now save us (not the putting away of the filth of the flesh, but the answer of a good conscience toward God,) by the resurrection of Jesus Christ:

2 Timothy 1:3: I thank God, whom I serve from my forefathers with pure conscience, that without ceasing I have remembrance of thee in my prayers night and day;

Feeling bad because of your sin? Instead of believing you have lost your salvation, praise the Lord! Confess the sin, enjoy God*s forgiveness and serve the Him with a pure conscience.
